Sawlog Prices Fell 5-12% Worldwide in the 3Q/08 as Lumber Markets Weakened


Reduced consumption of lumber in North America and Europe in the 3Q/08 resulted in lower demand for sawlogs and declining prices for softwood timber, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ). Because wood costs account for 65-75% of the production costs when producing softwood lumber, they are the key factor determining a regions or company’s competitiveness.

Wood Costs Fell For Many Pulpmills Worldwide in the 3Q 2008, Reports WRQ


Wood fiber costs, the cost component that often determines a pulp manufacturer’s competitiveness, fell for the first time in many years in practically all major pulp-producing regions around the world in the 3Q/08, according to the market report Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ). This drop was the result of two main factors: a strengthening US dollar against most major currencies combined with a reduced demand for pulpwood.

Sawlog prices increase in China in 3Q 2008 as log supply tightens, reports WRI


The domestic sawlog market in China has tightened as a result of reduced log imports from Russia in 2008. The increased competition for logs has pushed log prices upward to record highs in the 3Q 08, according to Wood Resources International.

Log Costs Fell in Russia in The 3Q/08 as The Forest Industry Cut Back Production


The Russian economy started to slow in the 3Q with a decrease in housing constructions and reduced demand for lumber both domestically and in the export market.

Russian Log Export Taxes Will Raise Unemployment In Russia Reports WRI


The Russian Federal Government is trying to assist development of its forest industry by adding export taxes on logs, thereby limiting competition by foreign companies for the Russian timber, as reported by Wood Resource Quarterly. These taxes are currently 25% of the log value (minimum €15/m3) for softwood logs and are scheduled to increase to a minimum of €50/m3 (about US$78/m3) from January 2009.

Higher Wood Chip Export Prices In Australia In 2008 As Wood Supply Tightens


Australia, which is the major supplier of hardwood chips to Japan, currently supplies 34% of the Japanese total import volume. The two other large Eucalyptus chip suppliers, Chile and South Africa, have also substantially increased their prices since early 2000.
