Singing is entering a new era. Singers and teachers are finding that old concepts of sound and fixed ways of teaching are not serving a world that is constantly exposed to singing of every style and sonority from across the globe. Various multi-media, Internet and television exposes us, in some cases bombards us, with singing of every conceivable variety and style. It’s impossible to avoid. There are even examples of educational courses and information being done in rap style (the Cern rap). The urge to sing is pervasive. It is no longer just the domain of the stage; our models have changed. For years, the perception has been: “I can’t sing”—meaning I don’t sing well enough to do it in the public arena. That has changed; and with it, the teaching of singing as well. Those who have always wanted to sing are finding their own way to do it.
